    Description

Please examine photos. They are THIS item and are part of the description. I do not use stock photos or photos of other people’s items.
This is a silver medal awarded in the 1881 Regates de Nice rowing/canoeing competition sponsored by the French Ministry of the Navy "Ministere de la Marine et des Colonies". It was designed and signed by "Barre", Albert Desire Barre, the 18th Chief Engraver of the Paris Mint from 1855 to his death in 1878.
(A similar medal for Regates in Rouen is dated 1874, and another for Regates in Ciotat in 1886, the same design being used for a number of years.) The edge is marked with the Paris Privy mark, a cornucopia, adopted 1880, and "ARGENT" for silver. It is 34mm in diameter and weighs 15.7 grams. The fields have a mirrored "proof like" finish. The above referenced Rouen medal is listed elsewhere for 100 Euro. For the connoiseur of rowing and/or apertifs, I have listed a gold medal awarded to Marius Dubonnet and his boat "The Swift".
